Chapter Sixteen

Trevor Witlow's business was booming. Leaving the military and striking out on his own was the best decision he'd ever made. He had contacts all over Seoul, and the only downside was he was forced to turn down deals because he couldn't fill all his orders. Lately, Whitlow had gotten into a highly profitable new line of imports. Pornography in all forms is strictly banned in South Korea. Websites, books, movies, magazines, etc, are all prohibited from entering the country. But as is always the case, the black market thrives when goods are banned.

Whitlow was supplying 12 different operators with all the pornography they wanted. His ties in the U.S. and Britain gave him an inexhaustible supply. Whitlow knew how to smuggle porn into the country disguised as technical magazines. He also had people in his orbit smuggle in photos via zip drives. Whitlow even had a couple of customs officers in his pocket that occasionally looked the other way, so long as the price was right.

Whitlow talked with his right-hand man, Kim, about their most significant opportunity. "Kim, I'm excited about this bear bile thing. I talked with my contact, Digger, in the States yesterday, and it really looks good. Digger expects a large shipment of grolar bear bile within 7-10 days. He wants to ensure we have the buyers lined up and that the transactions are processed quickly. I told him we were ready and just needed 24-hour advance notice. You might want to pay a visit to Soo and Wang, to make sure they are ready to pay as soon as we deliver that bile. Anyone balks or seems shaky, screw 'em, and move on to the next buyer."

"Got it, boss. I'm heading out shortly and will pay them a visit. Everything will be smooth on our end. I guarantee it."

Carrie and Linda waited in Linda's law office in Troy, Michigan, for their 1:00 p.m. meeting with the FOC referee, Carla. "So Carrie," Linda said, "You need to be truthful in answering any questions Carla poses, but don't offer too much detail unless asked. I've had clients get into trouble by saying too much instead of just answering the question asked. I checked around with other attorneys who know Carla, and we don't want to lie or misstate anything in this meeting. She goes strictly by the book. We want to try to get her on our side so she can make a recommendation to the judge to kill this custody motion."

"I'm getting more nervous because this person who doesn't know me or Tyler has so much power," Carrie replied. "She may have an agenda and could be influenced by her husband. I'll always be truthful in what I say, but I'm getting scared about how this may go."

"Don't be scared. We're fighters, and I'll fight for you until we win. This is an important meeting, but all isn't lost even if it goes badly. Hopefully, it will go great, and she'll realize you're a superb Mom, and this is frivolous.
